The DLTC Spanish and Italian Evening classes for the new year are scheduled to start over the coming weeks from 23rd January 2012. We also have an extra Beginners Spanish (Spanish 1) starting on 1st February on Wednesday nights as our Monday night class is practically full.

THE BANK of alternate words for saying “hello” and “goodbye” among the majority of Irish people is often limited to “bonjour” and “au revoir”. Exporters, investors and educationalists blame our limited word bank on a “historical hangover” with French.

But now it is becoming clear that a country with conservative foreign language ambitions must latch on to emerging trends, stockpile the language bank and exchange pleasantries – and much more – in a variety of languages.

Russian, Chinese and Spanish have become the second language of choice for schoolgoers world-over as countries seek to tap into the markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Ireland is miles behind. There is a full range of these language courses starting in January at the DLTC language school in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The bad nes is that, due to their popularity, our Monday and Wednesday Cambridge FCE English courses are full - but the great news is that we are starting a new FCE course on Thursday evenings from next week (6th October 2011).

The course follows the same successful format from 6.45-9.45pm and offers the same great value (100euro for 4 weeks; 280euro for 12 weeks). Killiney Martello Tower school visit

The French Festival of Boats took place in Dun Laoghaire last weekend and as the French Navy frigate left Dun Laoghaire, the cannon was fired from the Martello tower in Killiney - see the video http://photopol.com/martello/french_salute.wmv. The historic tower has been lovingly restored over the last 10 years by its owner and DLTC English Language students were priviliged to be able to visit it earlier this summer. We're going to see if we can visit again next week.

Spanish and Italian Evening Classes starting September/October 2011

It's been a great summer so far here and there's lots more to come in August but I just want to let people know that the DLTC Language School has a schedule for our Autumn Spanish and Italian evening courses. The part-time language courses will be starting up again in September and October - for our ninth year running! The first course is a beginners Spanish course which is starting on 5th September - much earlier than the other courses which mostly start at the end of September or start of October. We have 4 different levels of Italian and 5 different levels of Spanish ranging from beginner's to intermediate conversation. All the classes focus as much as possible on getting students speaking and, with an average of 7/8 students per class (maximum 11), students should get good practice at speaking. Booking is in advance and, with limited class sizes, early booking is advisable. As usual, all teachers are fully-qualified teachers and native-speakers. We're only 200 metres from Dun Laoghaire DART station and there's lots of free on-street parking (free after 7pm and courses start at 7.15pm!) directly in front of the school.

Differences between Spanish language spoken in Spain and in Latin America

Sometimes students coming to Spanish courses at the DLTC Language School (Dublin, Ireland) ask us about the differences between the Spanish language spoken in Spain and that spoken in Latin America. The good news is that the differences are no greater than those between the English spoken in England and the English spoken in Ireland or in other English speaking countries. People from Latin America and Spain communicate without difficulty. They read books and watch movies or programs from any Spanish speaking country. However there are a few small differences worth noting.

As with any language spoken over wide areas, we have to keep in mind that there are many accents and that these accents differ not only from country to country but from one region of Spain to another. Probably the main difference in pronunciation of Spanish between regions is the famous ‘lisp’ /θ/ - which sounds like our ‘th’ in the English word ‘thanks’. This sound is characteristic of the Spanish spoken in northern and central

Spain

and is generally used for the letters “z” and “c” before “i “or “e”. Thus “Barcelona” becomes like “barthelona” if it were written in English. However most of Latin America and southern Spain (Seville, Malaga etc) lack this sound and pronounce “z” and “c” as “s”.

In relation to the grammar, the most noticeable difference is the use of vosotros and ustedes to refer to “you (plural)”. Vosotros is used in Spain to refer “you” plural for informal situations – the verb that goes with it is used in the 2^nd person plural form. Ustedes is used in Spain to refer to “you” plural in formal situations – the verb that goes with it is used in the 3^rd person plural form (imagine we used ‘they’ to address a group of people in front of us). In Latin America the situation is somewhat simpler in ustedes is the word commonly used to refer to “you” plural in both formal and informal situations.

Just as there vocaubulary differences between the English of Europe and that of the US (think of the words “queue” (UK & Ireland) versus “line” (US)), there are also some differences in the vocabulary of European and American Spanish. For example the Spanish word for “computer” in Latin America would be “computadora” but “ordenador “in Spain but in an age of international media most speakers would know these variations.

So as you can see there are some differences between Castillian and American Spanish – however these differences are small and in spite of them, Spanish is used by millions of native speakers across the world in order to to communicate with people from other Spanish speaking countries and also with non native speakers. So if you are learning Spanish, no matter where, as long as you learn to use the language properly, you will be able to have contact with native speakers around the world without difficulty.

As one learner, I know, said: "From my own experience of over 20 years using Spanish in Spain and in Latin-America, I’m sure I have been misunderstood many times but, as far as I know, never because of using forms from one region in a different one."

RBS Torneo Internacional de Rugby 6 naciones.

Se lleva a cabo en febrero y marzo, este es el evento internacional de rugby de Europa mas importante del ano. Este aňo Dublin sera el escenario donde jugara Irlanda vs Francia el domingo 13 de febrero a las 5pm ; asi como Irlanda vs Inglaterra el sabado 9 de marzo a las 5pm. Otros partidos incluyen Italia vs Irlanda el sabado 5 de febrero de 2011 a las 2:30pm; Escocia vs Irlanda domingo 27 de febrero ; Gales vs Irlanda el sabado 12 de marzo. No es facil conseguir tickets para estos partidos, pero es estupendo verlos en los pubs donde siempre hay un gran ambiente. (Deportes)

Festival del dia de San Patricio- El festival nacional de Irlanda (hay eventos en todos los pueblos en Irlanda. Los eventos se llevan a cabo durante la semana del 17 al 20 de marzo. El Dia de San Patricio es el dia nacional de Irlanda. En cada pueblo, ciudad y villa, hay un desfile colorido con un fantastico ambiente familiar con musica en vivo y danzas en las calles y en los bares. El desfile mas grande se realiza en Dublin y en los ultimos anos en Dublin se ha llevado a cabo durante 5 dias en las fechas que se mencionan. Gran carrera en Irlanda – evento de carrera popular para todos los niveles : internacionales, profesionales, aficionados, interesados en marchas atleticas y corredores (Phoenix Park, Dublin – 10 Abril de 2011). Esto es una carrera de 10 kilometros a traves del bello Phoenix Park de Dublin, el cual es un lugar bello para visitar cualquier epoca del ano. El ano pasado miles participaron en esta corrida. Festival de caminata por las colinas de Wicklow (varios lugares Condado de Wicklow – mediados de Abril)- Wicklow es una area de montanas bellas y silvestres localizadas en el sur de Dublin. Se puede llegar en 30 minutos en bus o en coche de Dun Laoghaire. Los detalles del festival para el 2011 aun no se han dado a conocer. Este ano se estara celebrando los 138 anos de este espectaculo ; el evento ecuestre mas significativo de Irlanda. Es, sin duda, uno de los eventos mas destacados de un verano tradicional en Dublin y ofrece un fantastico dia para los amantes de los caballos y tambien para la familia. La feria Puck (Killorglin, condado de Kerry – 10, 11 y 12 de agosto) – La feria es uno de los festivales mas antiguos e inusuales de Irlanda. Se realiza sin falta el 10, 11 y 12 de agosto cada ano con mucho entretenimiento en las calles. El momento mas importante de esta feria es cuando la gente coloca una corona en un macho cabrio y se le hace Rey del festival. Por 3 dias, el Rey Puck se para en una plataforma en el medio del pueblo y observa las festividades. Para llegar aqui se necesita rentar un coche o tomar un transporte publico – alojamiento puede ser dificil de encontrar en las areas inmediatas pero es factible en los pueblos cercanos. Here are some photos of our student trip to the Chester Beatty Library and Dublin Castle . The Chester Beatty Library is a fantastic museum to visit in the gardens of Dublin Castle. It was voted European museum of the year in 2002 and has a collection of beautiful Oriental and Asian treasures. It's free to enter the museum and it is set in the wonderful gardens of Dublin Castle. Free Irish Music Night - Friday 28th Jan

Free traditional Irish music night! This Friday night! All students and friends are welcome!

Continuing our regular cultural programme, the DLTC language school is having a traditional Irish music night on the 28th January. The event takes place in the Harbour bar and grill on Marine Road in Dun Laoghaire (see on google map) and is free for all DLTC Language School students and their friends. If you attend another language school, but want to come, you are very welcome but just let us know with an RSVP on our facebook event page .

The event will feature traditional Irish musicians in a typical pub location. It starts at 9pm and finishes at 11pm so you still have time to get a bus or a DART home or to the city centre (to continue the party!).

The traditional music night we had last month was a great success (despite the snow and ice!) with about 50 students attending - thanks to Claire we had a guitarist and a fiddle (violin) player and two fantastic Irish dancers. The dancers showed us how the traditional dances are done and then did a great job in getting some of the audience up to try it for themselves. Have a look at the video from last month!

The DLTC language school aims to promote the learning of foreign languages and the experience of cultures through our language courses (English courses, Spanish classes, Italian classes, French classes etc) and our regular cultural events that will take place throughout 2011.

Ireland is a great place to visit in 2011!! It is official!! As we were saying in our most recent article, we think Ireland is a great place to visit at any time of the year and our thoughts have been confirmed by the readers of Frommer's travel guides who have voted Ireland as top European holiday destination for 2011 - see this report in the Irish Times newspaper: Frommer's votes Ireland top European tourist destination for 2011

The beautiful landscapes, the people, the castles, the beer are all mentioned as reasons to make Ireland the most 'tourist-friendly' country: "Frommer’s Irish highlights include sailing around the west coast, horseback riding in Donegal and drinking a hot whiskey in Davy Byrne’s pub. It recommends Newgrange, the Slieve Blooms, the Dublin Writers’ Museum, Cahir Castle, Glendalough, Powerscourt Gardens, kayaking in west Cork, cycling through Cork and Kerry and kissing the Blarney Stone." (Irish Times Newspaper)

The Irish Times also tell us of a recent report by the official Irish tourism board "Failte Ireland" which shows that prices in Ireland are decreasing and value-for-money is improving for tourists visiting Ireland.

At the DLTC English Language school in Dun Laoghaire in Dublin, Ireland, we're often asked this question by students who want to come on a study holiday to Dublin to learn English. The good news is that it's always a good time to visit Ireland, Dublin and Dun Laoghaire - there are some great events on all year round. January:
Temple Bar Trad fest - traditional Irish music festival (Temple Bar area of Dublin - last week of January) Every January, the pubs of Temple Bar come alive with the sound of traditional Irish music. This is a great opportunity to see Irish music in its traditional setting - the Irish pub. Temple Bar is the centre of Dublin's nightlife and is only 20 minutes by DART (train) from the DLTC Language School in Dun Laoghaire. Temple Bar is full of pubs, restaurants, galleries, discos and is right in the very centre of Dublin, it is a 'must-see' on every tourists list of things to do. Funderland Fun Park (RDS Ballsbridge - 26th December 2010 to 11th January 2011) - Funderland is the largest travelling Theme Park in the Europe. Jameson Dublin International Film Festival (17-27th February 2011) - 10 wonderful days of movies new and old from all around the world that are shown in cinemas all around the centre of Dublin. In every town, city and village, there is a colourful parade and a great family atmosphere with live music and dancing on the streets and in the pubs. The largest parade is in Dublin and in recent years events in Dublin has taken place over 5 days around the 17th. March 17th is definitely the best day of the year to visit Dublin. This is a 10km run through Dublin's beautiful Phoenix Park which is a beautiful place to visit anytime. Last year thousands took part in this run. Wicklow Hills Walking Festival (various locations Co Wicklow - mid April) - Wicklow is an area of beautiful and wild mountains to the south of Dublin. You can reach these mountains within 30 minutes by bus or car from Dun Laoghaire. Details have not yet been announced of the 2011 festival. Last year the festival included a wide range of activities all based in the Wicklow Hills: trekking, mountain walking, hiking, mountain biking, river kayaking, paintballing, orienteering, horseriding, bird watching, fishing. Good Friday (Friday before Easter) - school is closed but there is an extra free private tour/event for full-time DLTC language school English students this week.
**Important note: No alcohol can be sold in Ireland on Good Friday (Friday before Easter) so all pubs etc are closed on this day.
Easter Monday (day after Easter Sunday) - is a public holiday in Ireland so there is no school at the DLTC Language School this day but there is an extra free private tour for DLTC full-time English students on the Friday of this week.

Bloomsday - James Joyce Festival (Dublin city and Dun Loaghaire - 16th June 2011) - June 16th is BLOOMSDAY, the day in 1904 on which all the action of James Joyce’s novel Ulysses takes place. It is celebrated every year on 16th June by Joyceans all over the world. It is traditional to dress up and go out for the day, visiting the locations of the book around Dublin and taking part in readings, walks, food, music and drink which in some way connect with the book. Dublin Horse Show (RDS Ballsbridge - 03rd August - 07th August 2011) - From August 3-7 the Dublin Horse Show takes place in the RDS complex in the heart of Dublin. This year they are celebrating 138 years of the Dublin Horse Show, Ireland’s top equestrian event. It really is one of the highlights of a traditional Dublin summer and offers a great day out for horse enthusiasts and families alike. 15 minutes by DART (train) to Sydney Parade DART station from the DLTC Language School in Dun Laoghaire. Puck Fair (Killorglin, Co Kerry - 10, 11, 12th August) - The fair is one of Ireland's oldest and most unusual festivals. It is held without fail on 10th, 11th and 12th August every year with lots of free street entertainment. The main feature of the fair is that the people place a crown on a wild goat and make him 'King' of the festival. For the 3 days, the 'King Puck' stands on a platform in the middle of the town and watches over the festivities. This will require car hire or taking national transport - accommodation can be difficult to find in the immediate area but is available in nearby towns. At the end of January each year there is a festival of Irish music that takes place in the pubs and venues of Temple Bar area of Dublin. It takes place this year over 5 days from 26th-30th January 2011. This is what the organisers say: "Temple Bar Trad is Dublin's premier celebration of traditional music and culture. It's hard to believe that before the first ever Temple Bar Trad in January 2006, Dublin had lacked a traditional music festival for almost twenty years! Temple Bar Trad is all about the music." Our student excursion for Halloween to Wicklow Historic Gaol today was great .. there are some photos on the DLTC language school's facebook group and page! The free tour by private bus was attended by 30 students on our General English language course. After receiving an informational talk on the history of the gaol yesterday by the school director and some more information from the 'jailer' himself, we all wandered around the jail, it's dungeons and cells .. a wonderfully spooky place for Halloween! And of course after all of that thirsty work, we finished with a pint in one of Wicklow towns typical Irish pubs! A great afternoon! :)

10 relaxing things to do in Dun Laoghaire this summer:

While studying English at the DLTC English language school this summer, here are some things to do in your free time - see the google map below or at here for locations:

1) Dun laoghaire festival 23, 24, 25 July. Over 200,000 people come to Dun Laoghaire in one weekend for music, food, art and crafts from all over the world. Most of the entertainment is free and happens at various locations around the town and along the seafront. Verdict: fantastic!

2) Dun laoghaire Market in the Park. Every Sunday summer and winter, the market in the Peoples Park Dun Laoghaire runs from about 10am to 5pm and offers very tasty food (mostly organic, healthy and local); great coffee; and various bits of art, crafts, plants. Verdict: very relaxing place for an hour or two on Sunday.

3) DLR Events - throughout the year, the local council organizes entertainment and art events such as the Movies in the Park (free movies in the Peoples Park Dun Laoghaire in June). For all these events see dlrevents

4) The Dalkey Seals: at Bulloch harbour between Sandycove and Dalkey visit the wild seals that live there. Only a 20 minute walk from Dun Laoghaire main street, visiting Bulloch Harbour is like time-travelling to a typical fishing village of 200 years ago on the west coast of Ireland - you certainly could never imagine this is in a modern city. The seals are fed by the local fishermen so they are there every day, though maybe not all day. If it’s the season you can buy fresh crab and lobster from the fishermen there.

5) Small boat fishing: Also in Bulloch Harbour, if you are there in July or August, why not hire a boat and rod and go fishing for Mackerel. Boat and equipment can be hired for about 20-30euro per hour which is not too expensive when shared with 3/4 people. Even if you don't fish, its a great way to see the coast around Sandycove and Dalkey.

6) Walk Killiney Hill. Take the DART to Killiney. Come out of Killiney Station, turn right along the seafront road; follow the road as it goes up a steep hill (it goes past the house of Bono from U2 at the top); continue on straight until you have a wonderful view of Killiney Bay and Dalkey Island; on the left hand side there is a small path that will take you up Killiney Hill; or you can continue along the road that will eventually bring you to Dalkey village; have a beer to relax and then take the DART home! .... or go on any of the Tuesday afternoon guided walks organised by the DLTC language school for full-time students (Bray-Greystones along the cliffs; Howth Head, etc)

7) Have a beer outside Finnegans pub in Dalkey or Ivory if you prefer more modern.

8) Boat trip to dalkey island. Not always available but forless than 10euro, you will be taken by small boat from Colliemore Harbour to dalkey island. There, you can explore the beauty, the views and the ruins for an hour or two before the return.

9) Swim in the sea at the Forty Foot in Sandycove. This is a huge traditional swimming place for the whole of Dublin. People from everywhere go swimming here all year round and at Christmas there are festivities and hot drinks as the swimmers brave icy water. If you prefer warm water, there is the public swimming pool in Monkstown.

10) Dalkey Castle. Costs about 5euro but you get the history of Dalkey since the vikings (told by actors dressed up from the period) and you get to go up on top of the tower to see all across Dalkey to Dun Laoghaire.

11) Walk the East pier followed a 99 ice cream from Teddy's. A 99 is the white ice cream on a cone with the piece of chocolate 'flake' stuck into it.

Pubs, music, food, entertainment etc: Privee disco at the 40ft bar Friday and Saturday nights; Pavilion Theatre for various shows; Walters bar for drink, food and live music (late bar at weekends). Kingston Hotel for drink, food, music and great outdoor area overlooking the sea on a sunny day!;

Other things: PADI dive centre, sailing school; rock climbing in Dalkey; all-weather 6-a-side football pitches (Monkstown Pool); public Tennis Courts (Clarinda Park Dun Laoghaire); 12 screen cinema (besides Tesco Bloomfield Shopping Centre Dun Laoghaire).

"Ich bin zur Sprachenschule DLTC (Dun Laoghaire Tuition Centre) gegangen, was eine sehr gute Wahl war. Die Lehrer waren sehr nett und immer hilfbereit, ausserdem wurde im Unterricht viel Wert auf Kommunikation, Sprachfertigkeit, Hörverstehen, Lesen und Schreiben, sowie auf die englische Grammatik gelegt. Ich habe in kurzer Zeit viel lernen können und somit in höhere Kurse aufsteigen. In der DLTC wird man meiner Meinung nach sehr gut auf die verschiedenen Exame vorbereitet. Das Lernen macht Spass, weil es in einer lockeren freundlichen Umgebung passiert. Ausserdem bietet die DLTC ab und an kleine Ausflüge oder Veranstaltungen für ihre Studenten an, sodass man auch die Studenten anderer Kurse kennen lernen kann. " - Laura

DLTC English Student Tour to Glendalough May 2010

What a nice way to relax at the end of a week of studying English in the classroom! On Friday some of the English language students took the opportunity of a free school tour (guided by Bob, the school director) to Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains. Listening to the information is a great way to learn some more English too!

As Bob explained to the group, Glendalough ('valley of the two lakes') is famous for 2 reasons: firstly, as part of the Wicklow Mountains National Park, it's a very beautiful place; and secondly, it has an incredible history stretching back 1500 years. The hermit, St Kevin, came to live here in a cave known as Kevin's Bed in the first millenium AD. He was joined by a group of followers who lived here as monks and built the famous Round Tower (see photo) and the monastic city. For over a thousand years the site was a renowned place of pilgrimmage to which people from all over Ireland would come each year to pray in the cold water of the Glendasan River. (The pilgrimmage was eventually stopped by local police in the 1800s as there was too much drinking, gambling and fighting!!?)

Other features of the valley include the two lakes; the ruins of a miners' village from the 1800s; a network of marked paths through the woods and mountains; the waterfalls at Glendasan and Poulanass; a visitors centre; and a range of wild flora and fauna including deer (which we saw!), feral goats (which we saw!), foxes, badgers, falcons.

To get to Glendalough when there is no tour orgainsed by the school, you can take the St Kevins Bus Service from Bray - see http://www.glendaloughbus.com/. To see the paths and other information about the site, see http://www.wicklowmountainsnationalpark.ie/. If you have a group and want to go any time, ask Bob, the school director, and he might be able to arrange a private tour for you. He can also facilitate treks through the mountains for our English language students.

Spanish and Italian Language Courses for April

The DLTC Language School is starting another full set of evening courses in Spanish & Italian in April 2010. The courses as ever are 10 week courses which will bring us up to the end of June - just in time for your summer holidays in Spain and Italy!

The courses are all one evening per week (from 19:15-21:15 - nights vary depending on level) with levels including beginners, elementary, pre-intermediate and conversational. Teachers as usual are all qualified and experienced native speakers.

Courses are kept light-hearted, fun and with a special emphasis on spoken, practical use of the language - definitely not too heavy on the grammar!

DLTC Language School St Patricks Week 2010

Wow! What a busy St Patricks Week we just had at the school! Party, tour ... It started with Nancy's free lecture for full-time English students on Tuesday afternoon about the "Irish saints and superstitions" .. a very appropriate topic for the week of St Patricks Day.

Then we had the party at the school on St Patricks Eve .. who can forget that! or maybe, who can remember it??!! A great night with lots of Guinness (and soft drinks!), many renditions of Molly Malone, and the old Irish song "Clavelitos" (!!?) .. we will have more photos of this party as soon as I can find the camera ;) If anyone has any, please put them up on our wall here.

Obviously there was no school on Wednesday, St Patricks Day itself. Instead on Friday afternoon, we had a free tour for full-time English students to Lough Dan in County Wicklow .. I think everyone agreed: a very beautiful place and good place to visit - I really enjoyed showing it to the group. The location is not on the usual tourist trails or public bus routes .. so this was a great opportunity. Have a look at the pictures on our wall here.

So that's St Patricks festivities until next year .. but don't worry, we'll find some more occasions to celebrate soon! Easter egg anyone?

Working in Ireland - Applying for a PPS number

Many English language students arriving from EU countries wish to work in Ireland. In order to work in Ireland, you must have a PPS number - it is like a personal reference number for tax and social security issues. In order to get a PPS number, you will have to go to a PPSN registration centre and bring with you several documents - if you are an EU national, this will be: your passport or national ID card and Evidence of Address in Ireland (household utility bill, official letter, financial statement, property lease/rental agreement, employers letter - any with your name and address on it). There has been a new set of Cambridge FCE, CAE and CPE Exam dates announced for June 2010. DLTC Cambridge English Exam students can sit the exams at UCD. DLTC English language students can alternatively register for the exams in the DLTC school office up to 1pm on 1st April - please note that when registering for a Cambridge English exam through the DLTC office an extra admin fee of 15€ is charged.

March 17th - St Patricks Day is coming .. time to celebrate!!

March 17th is St Patricks Day, the national day of Ireland and, as usual, there will be big celebrations in Dublin, all over Ireland, and of course in the DLTC Language School.

So what is happens on St Patrick's Day? Well it's more like St Patricks Week because, in Dublin, the festival starts on Friday 12th of March and continues all the way through Wednesday 17th March.

There will be a big fireworks display in Limerick on the evening of Saturday 13th.
On Saturday morning there is a free Treasure Hunt around the city for all ages and all people - "Solve the clues, compete for spot prizes, complete the route and become the cleverest, fastest or best dressed team". Register online to beat the queues! A great way to discover and explore the city - we can even enter a team from the school!!
There will be funfairs and amusements around the city all during the week.
And of course The St Patricks Day Parade - join the crowds at about 12-2pm along O'Connell Street or Dame Street to watch the colour, the dancers, the bands, the music - then dance in the streets and join the crowds in the city's pubs for music and fun.

On the Tuesday night16th March there will be a celebration in the DLTC school from about 8pm with some Irish music, food and drinks - afterwards we'll all go into Dublin to continue the party there.

Another website for English language learning topics that I like to check out from time to time is http://www.englishforums.com/ . There are sections for teachers, for students, forums, chat and for asking questions - so if you have a question about English grammar or vocabulary and you need a quick answer, why not post it here and one of the site members / teachers will usually provide it - I might even answer you myself! You can also set up your profile and make friends with other learners which is a great way to practise your English. Oh .. and you can log in very easily just by using your Facebook account - good huh!?

Well done to everybody at the school. At the end of every course, we ask students to tell us what they think of our language courses and our school. We ask them what they liked and what they didn't like so that we are always improving our courses and delivering what students want. Cambridge English Exam Dates May 2010

There has been a new set of Cambridge FCE, CAE and CPE Exam dates announced for May 2010. DLTC Cambridge Exam students can sit the exams at UCD. For more information or to register online visit http://alcexams.ucd.ie/cambridge/. DLTC students can alternatively register in the DLTC school office up to 1pm on 26th February.

Here's a site I found recently http://www.usingenglish.com/. It seems like a very good resource for learning (and teaching English) with articles, forums and reference materials. It has areas for both teachers and students and a search engine for idioms, irregular and phrasal verbs. Try the idiom reference search engine .. http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/ .. now can anyone tell me what it means if I say "I'm not going to bust my chops" ???? .. just type in the word 'chop' and see what idioms it gives you!

Dun Laoghaire World Culture Festival 2010

This year the 2010 Dun Laoghaire World Culture Festival takes place on 23rd, 24th, 25th of July. The culture festival started 10 years ago and has become one of the most popular festivals in Ireland and certainly the biggest in Dublin. Each year hundreds of thousands of people visit Dun Laoghaire on the weekend of the festival to listen to live music, taste cuisine, and buy products from all around the world. All day on each of the three days, there are events and activities for all age groups in the many different venues around the town. So it really is a fantastic weekend of the year to be in Dun Laoghaire and to make friends with people from everywhere. If you are planning on attending an English language course at the DLTC language school, this would be a perfect time of the year to come - but do book early, as there may be a big demand for courses and accommodation at this time. When students come to attend an English language course at the DLTC Language School, we advise on places to visit in the local and wider area. Here are some of the better things to do:

Phoenix Park: to the west of Dublin. You can take the red tram (LUAS) line to get there and one of the nicest ways of seeing the park is by bike - you can hire bicycles in the park for 1, 2, 3 hours at a time: http://www.phoenixpark.ie/)
The Guinness Factory in Dublin 8. It costs 14 euros (for which you get a 'free' pint of Guinness in the rooftop bar). Take the red LUAS line or one of the many buses from the city centre - walking takes at least 30 minutes from Trinity College in the centre of Dublin: http://www.guinness-storehouse.com/en/Index.aspx)
Kilmainham jail: Dublin 8. The historic prison has been converted into a museum that remembers Ireland's struggle for independence from Britain. http://www.kilmainham-gaol.com/why.htm)

Powerscourt Gardens: Enniskerry, these are beautiful gardens set at the base of the Wicklow Mountains. Powerscourt Waterfall: Enniskerry, beautiful waterfall set against the Wicklow Mountains. 5/6 euros (Difficult to get to without a car but you can take the above buses to Enniskerry and then its a 7 km walk through beautiful countryside - be careful on the small roads!)http://www.powerscourt.ie/gardens/waterfall/)
Howth: North Dublin, a fine place to eat and buy seafood. There is a beautiful walk around the headland and every few weeks a DLTC Language School teacher will bring English language students around this walk for free. Take the train (DART) to Howth
Newgrange: near Drogheda, these are tombs that are older than the pyramids of Egypt some of which you can enter (there are tours from the bus station in Dublin http://www.knowth.com/newgrange.htm)
Cliff of Moher: Incredible cliffs on the west coast of Ireland that fall into the Atlantic ocean (take a bus to Galway and after a bus to the cliffs - this will take at least a full day and we would advise two days - or you can take a one or two day bus tour: http://www.cliffsofmoher.ie/)

Welcome to the DLTC Language Schools blog on blogspot.

The DLTC is a language school based in Dublin, Ireland. We specialise mostly in teaching English as a foreign language but we also teach Spanish, Italian, French and some other modern languages.

The aim of this blog is to provide information on learning languages in general and particularly in Ireland. So we hope to post articles on everything from English grammar, to Spanish pronunciation, to advice on attending language study courses and tips on things to do in Dublin when not studying.

We will also provide some information on our English and foreign language school and the language courses we provide, but that is not the main purpose of this blog. For most of that information, you'd be better advised to visit our website http://www.dltc.ie.
